Dear Families,

MIS has a long-standing tradition of participating in the UM’s International Festival, held every spring at the University.  This year the International Festival will be held on Sunday, March 23rd and should prove to be full of exciting and culturally rich activities.  MIS has developed a plan that we hope will be engaging for all of our preschool through fifth grade students:

When:  Sunday, March 23rd

Time: 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m

Where:  UM University Center

  • Preschoolers will be exploring the festival.   They will have a five senses passport to encourage them to explore as many different country groups as possible.
  • Kindergarten and first graders will expand on this exploration through a scavenger hunt.   The scavenger hunt will encourage them to look for examples of diverse and intriguing food/music/art/dance from different cultural traditions.
  • The second and third grade children will be performing @ 12:30  in the International Culture Show which takes place in the University Ballroom.  This performance will reflect their Spanish immersion and PYP experiences at MIS.  Children are encouraged to wear their MIS tee-shirts for the performance.
  • The fourth and fifth grade students will be leading an art activity FROM 12:00 TO 3:30  at the Children’s World center in the UC Commons on the second floor.  Students will be encouraged to sign-up for hour long time slots during which they will have the opportunity to share their Spanish cultural and language knowledge with the Missoula community.

Here is the information specific for the 4th/5th graders:

We are excited to celebrate the International Culture and Food Festival at the University Center on Sunday, March 23rd from 12 – 5 p.m. This year, we would like to invite the 4th/5th graders to take an active role in this event by leading an arts and crafts activity in the MIS Children’s World station. Students will lead participants in making alebrijes and papel picado, two traditional crafts from Mexico. We encourage students to speak in Spanish as they guide others, exhibiting their proficiency in a foreign language and promoting the school’s mission and vision.

Please have your child sign up for a 30 minute time slot to participate in the Children’s World station at the International Festival. This is a great opportunity for your children to show responsibility and commitment to the school. Please sign up outside your child’s classroom. The time slots start at 12:00 and end at 3:30.
